Rose Plants
Caring for rose plants in the spring and summer is easy, just the basics and a monthly feeding of rose food. As winter approaches though bushes and climbers alike need to be prepared. Winterizing can be tricky here are some tips:
•Stop feeding and pruning in August to prevent new growth, which is too tender to make it through winter.
•Let the last flowers remain on the bush and turn into rose hips (seed pods) which will signal the plant to begin going dormant.
•Remove fallen leaves and other debris from the plant bed to prevent disease and infestation.
•In especially cold climates the bush can be loosened and laid on its side, so that it may be covered with a layer of mulch to protect it from snow and frost.
•Climbers can be wrapped in insulation such as straw or taken down from trellis and covered with a layer of mulch.
•In milder climates a layer of mulch or compost around the base will keep roots and graft area protected and dry.
Remember rose plants will come back hardy and full of life in the spring as long as they are properly winterized. Know what climate zone the plant lives in and look for resources online to guide the winterization.
