Red Roses

The color of red roses traditionally symbolizes love. Giving red roses signifies a romantic interest in the recipient. One rose means an intention to court, six means adoration; twelve means true love and a staggering one hundred and eight means “will you marry me?” Besides love, red roses also have had other meanings in history.

The Greeks and Romans used red roses to symbolize their goddesses of love Aphrodite and Venus. A red rose was the traditional gift left in their temples. Later Christians used the red rose to symbolize the blood of Christ and his struggles, therefore Christian martyrs are often depicted holding a red rose.

The red rose has also become a symbol of social democracy. This developed because the red rose was worn as a badge for street protestors in Paris in May 1968. Many European countries use the rose in the seal for their labor, socialist, or social democracy parties.
