| Selecting Roses
When selecting a rose, there are many things to consider;
fragrance, disease resistance, cut flowers, mass displays
of color and low maintenance. While it is impossible to
recommend any single rose that can offer all of the above,
here are a few tips to use when selecting a rose.
- Hybrid
teas make the best cut flowers. The flowers
are large and showy and will bloom every 6 weeks
through out the year.
- Romantic roses have
an old style flower but grow like the hybrid teas.
- Floribunda roses provide clusters of flowers and mass
displays of color. They are generally smaller than
the hybrid teas.
- Grandiflora roses also make
a good cut flower and can grow 8-10ft. tall. Use
these for mass color and as a good barrier plant.
- Climbing roses are divided into two groups; natural
climbers and climbing sports of bush roses. Some
will bloom in spring on old wood only, while
others will bloom on new and old wood.
- Miniature
roses generally grow 6 to 12in. tall and have
many uses. They
can be grown in containers for indoor use, come
in many colors and are considered everblooming.
Use outdoors in window boxes, rock gardens or as
a border plant.
- Shrub
and ground cover roses are excellent for covering
hillsides, perennial borders and providing lots
of color.
- Roses
